Garrett Graff Reveals How Fox News Became a Threat to National Security for WIRED
Fox News’ reporting is growing more and more dangerous, says WIRED contributor Garrett Graff. For the latest issue of the tech magazine, Graff looks into Fox’s propagandizing influence on the upcoming election.
Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz found no political bias in the 2016 FBI investigation into Donald Trump, a fact that was dismissed as “proof” of the power of the deep state on Fox Business. The network’s reporting— on everything from the impeachment probe to the aforementioned FBI investigation— has had a flagrant disregard for truth, says journalist Garett Graff. “Fox’s bubble reality creates a situation where it’s impossible to have the conversations and debate necessary to function as a democracy. Facts that are inconvenient to President Trump simply disappear down Fox News’ ‘memory hole,’ as thoroughly as George Orwell could have imagined in 1984.”
As the impeachment process wages on, and the election draws nearer, it’s imperative we understand how large and multifaceted the threat Fox News poses to our national security really is, argues Graff. First, in its decision to advance narratives backed by our foreign adversaries; second, by undermining America’s foundational ideals; and third, through “its unique combination of lies and half-truths” that leave viewers woefully misinformed.
“Fox’s clear willingness to parry the wingnuttiest ideas in service of the president, long-term implications to the United States be damned, should worry all concerned about the state of the United States.”
