The legendary Patti Smith performed last month in New York, where she read from her book Just Kids and played some of her most famous songs to a packed house at the 92nd St. Y. In a special live show, Smith alternated between reading from the National Book Award winning memoir, musing about life in spontaneous asides, and playing her iconic music with longtime Patti Smith Band guitarist Lenny Kaye. In a show review from Flavorwire, Smith was praised for delivering an utterly unique experience: “Like Patti Smith herself, the evening was messy and honest, intimate and utterly gorgeous. More than the songs or the readings or the special guests, what the night really offered was two glorious – and fun – hours with one of America’s greatest living artists.” At ease in front of any audience (she’s been performing on stage for over 40 years), Smith delivers a glimpse into the New York of the past, all while championing values and concepts that still resonate today – music, art, love, loyalty, and friendship.
