How to Speak So That People Want to Listen (9:58)

Lavin Exclusive Speaker

The miscommunication that results from poor listening costs global business over $10 trillion every year. This is a massive blind spot, says Julian Treasure—and a huge potential win for any organization that can leverage the speaking and listening skills that make trust-based human relationships possible. With five TED talks, including the sixth most-viewed TED talk of all time, Julian is one of the world’s top experts on communication. In keynotes that attendees describe as “eye-opening” and “tremendously practical,” Julian shows audiences how to use his “Conscious Communication Framework”—the four critical skills of conscious listening, powerful speaking, masterful presenting, and soundscaping—to enhance their personal and professional relationships, lead and persuade more effectively, resolve conflict more easily, and live happier, healthier, and more effective lives.

Julian Treasure helps leaders and teams supercharge their communication, performance, and relationships. His science-backed books, talks, and workshops teach how conscious listening, powerful speaking, and designed sound can enhance productivity, engagement and wellbeing.

Julian is one of the most-viewed and most prolific TED speakers of all time. He has given five TED talks, 10 TEDx talks, one TEDMED talk and one guest-curated TED 2026 session, with an estimated 170 million views in total. He has been widely featured in the world’s press, radio and TV, including NBC’s Today Show, BBC documentaries and leading podcasts such as Diary of a CEO. He has been honored with both Toastmasters International’s Golden Gavel Award and the International Listening Association’s Special Recognition Award, and his online courses on communication skills have taught over 150,000 students.

Julian’s first book, Sound Business, reveals that good sound is good business. His second, How To Be Heard, is a practical guide to improving personal communication skills; it won both the SOVAS and Audie global awards for best business audiobook of the year. His third, Sound Affects, explores the power and wonder of sound and the value of conscious listening in a noisy, distracted world.

Originally a musician with the indie bands Transmitters, Missing Presumed Dead, Fish Turned Human and Loop Guru, Julian founded his first business in 1988. As a leading UK magazine publishing entrepreneur, he became chairman of the Association of Publishing Agencies, a director of the Periodical Publishers Association, and chairman of the UK Government’s Digital Content Forum; in 2002, he received the PPA Chairman’s Award for services to the UK magazine publishing industry. A year later, he sold his publishing company and founded an audio branding agency. For the next 20 years, he helped major brands design effective sound in physical spaces, as well as in branding and marketing. Today, his mission is to regenerate the world’s listening, to which end he curates The Listening Society online.

Julian is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Marketors and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He lives in Orkney, Scotland, with four-time world champion martial artist Jane Majendie and their daughters, Holly and Sapphire.

Noise is the number one problem in modern workspaces, largely because our buildings are designed for how they look, not how they sound.
